Rune strike is soooo threatening!

Oh yes, I’m absolutely grinning. I’m flushed.

PTR 3.3 notes:

Rune Strike: Threat generated by this ability increased by approximately 17%.

That’s just what we need in Icecrown to make up for the loss of threat from lower avoidance, it’s what we need to scale our threat better for progression tanks.

Calculations I did yesterday were showing 7% loss of threat in Icecrown due to lower avoidance. Rune Strike is about 40% of a DK’s total threat, so 40% x 117% = 46.8% which fairly spot-on makes up for the loss.

The better solution to threat would be buffing Frost Presence threat by ~10%, because on non-melee fights where rune strike does not proc so much, DKs need help, but I’m pleased to have any kind of +threat boost even if it’s not the perfect implementation.

Other DKs changes are mostly for DPS:

  • Army of the Dead: The cooldown on this ability has been reduced from 20 minutes to 10 minutes. Army Ghoul damage dropped by 50%. Cannot be used in Arenas.
  • Raise Ally: The cooldown on this ability has been reduced from 15 minutes to 10 minutes. Cannot be used in Arenas. Source.

Army is actually like a DK shield wall, it reduces your incoming damage while channelling, so having it on 10 min cooldown is a helpful change for tanks.

An Unholy DK tank could easily move 2 points from a threat talent into improving Army with the talent Night of the Dead (apparently will be 4 min reduction not 5, making 6 min cooldown for the Army), and thus improve the ‘tanking’ cooldown. Interesting. Let’s see how that pans out.


I feel for my maintankadin brothers. What an emotional journey with the eye of sauron now on Lay on Hands. Righteous commented, Renaissance Man has too, and a few days ago Honors looked at Divine Sacrifice.

I think it’s fair to say, maintankadins’ changes have not yet been set in stone. As my former tank class, I’ve familiarity with the Pally and I hope they enter 3.3 strong. I wonder what it will all look like in the end.

  • Yeah, I think the rune strike buff is needed. I never thought of a DK using AoD as a damage reducing cooldown before. I always figured that the zero avoidance while channeling would get you torn apart. But now that I think about it, it would seem viable for situational use against magic heavy encounters.

    On an unrelated note, Elle, from Altadin, filled out an interesting healer survey, and then asked if anyone would be willing to put one together for tanks. I decided to put one together, and I’d like you to take a look at it, as a uniquely analytical blogger, I think your answers would give an interesting perspective.

      You’re right, Army is not for when you are facing a boss and he’s giving you the smackdown but Anub’arak is one encounter when you can use it as a tank; magic-heavy being the key test.

      For DPS, here’s a list of its uses.

  • I think maybe a combination of threat increase from frost presence and rune strike might be good. If they buff fp too much, then DKs become the best at aoe tanking by nature of just dropping D&D and sucking every mob in the vicinity to them!
