This article helps understand how to integrate a forum with wordpress. Over the next week I’m going to write a few posts about geeky technical things. First up is wp-united, and my views on forum integration with wordpress blogs, technically mostly, and a tour of the various forum software which can be integrated with wordpress.
Situation: I had a wordpress site which was getting so many comments on it (pwnwear, this one), notably including conversations between commenters, as opposed to

Enter this competition, get into beta. Expires Aug 13th before midnight.
I uploaded this onto youtube a few days ago. In case you haven’t seen it though.
This is the second part of questing in Deepholm, this time with video commentary. I got some software to help me edit and do voiceovers, so this video is of a higher production quality than those previous.
Lastly, if you’re on an RSS reader, it’s worth having a look at the new pwnwear front page. I’ve updated its navigation to be

 This is a must-read from a self-described ‘geek feminist’.
If you have any issues with the term ‘feminist’ then replace it with ‘critic’, and read the post.
My longer-term readers will know I can get fairly upset and vocal about harassment and the poor treatment of women in guilds. Related posts from me include parents who play WoW and relationships in-game. The first article includes a link out to empoweredfire, related to guys treating women poorly in-game because they hide

I’m trying to work out which keyboard to buy, to replace my UK-layout keyboard with a US-layout. Since I’m fairly sure I’ll also buy a Logitech G13, this means I do not need a gaming qwerty keyboard. I could get anything really.
When you play with a G13 and a Naga mouse, you do not need a normal keyboard in fights anymore. You’d use the full-size keyboard to hit ‘n’ or ‘m’ for talents and maps out-of-combat, but whilst

If you’re a DK tank or dpser looking for a new home after EJ’s latest clamp-down, please feel welcome to join our forums.
Be aware of our site rules. Whilst they are more community-oriented than EJ’s, we do require a discipline to stay on topic, intelligence, no leet speak and do not allow requests for spoon-feeding.
We do have an off-topic pub where you can vent about this or whatever else.
Forum registration (click here) takes about 15 seconds.

 This always annoys me.
First, the evidence:
Next, the analysis:
- As I said in that pug, “???” is not a question
- It is more like an accusation
- I didn’t even know about what
- He was dead, I then noticed
- And he somehow expected others to know (a) he was dead (b) why he died.
Hint: it was the first boss of Nexus, who can do a whirlwind attack…
I think farmville was named after Loserville, and

If you want to quit, or want to decide whether you should or not, if you are addicted, my friend provided a link to this site: wowdetox. I’m posting this here in case you are addicted in such a way that the game is ruining your life. The site is full of stories from people who have quit, want to quit, have lost their wife, or job, failed at Uni or simply had real-life achievements on hold for years.

I wonder how raiding schedules will change in Cataclysm. The new systems implemented with emblem limits alongside the shared raid ID for 10 and 25s. I had dinner tonight with a very good friend of mine, with whom I’ve played WoW since launch. He’s quit.
The game is addictive, we all know that, and have to balance our desire to play against real-world obligations. We should balance it. At time in the past, I’ve been more dedicated to WoW.

I have been wanting to do this for a while. Here are some of my moments from WoW captured in 16 screenshots, from January and February 2010.

How often we lament the idiots who post in official forums, the trolls who knee-jerk reaction is to criticise. Well, I lament it often, anyhow. This isn’t just WoW, it’s the internet. More accurately, being stupid is part of the human condition. I like to presume that most people are stupid and lazy until proven otherwise, and am delighted when I find intelligent people.
One of the things which annoys me, a lot, is those moderately intelligent people, or

I have two tank specs, and most tanks who will never dps can do the same. It’s a nice situation.
When I first joined my guild, on trial, I sometimes played as a dps before securing my spot in our tank corp. At another time in the past, I had a tank spec and pvp dps spec.
This post is written for those tanks who can carry two tank specs. I’m not talking to those top 300 tanks who

For the third time, just now, only hours before our progression raid on Sindragosa which hopefully I was due to join (ie. not rotated), my goddamn authenticator locked itself.
This is the third time!
I doubt I’ve been hacked, this is some strange behaviour in the battlenet system.
Makes me want to punch the wall and break my knuckles. Then cry a lot.
Update: 24 hours later, still can’t log on. Blizzard have unlocked it twice now, but then

Mine hates gaming, not WoW per se, but all computer games. “It’s not productive.”
I knew a guy who was really into golf. He went for a two week golf holiday, leaving his pregnant wife at home while he travelled to Scotland. Then, all year, he played golf every Saturday morning (at least), for what four hours or however long 18 holes takes, and would try to do some swings most mornings. He was more addicted to golf than

I’ve been reflecting a little on how strongly I identify myself as being a WoW player. There are a few dimensions to it.
Do you admit to being a gamer? Many players do not admit they play WoW to their non-gaming friends. If the friend isn’t a gamer, they might not understand, and it’s often easier to just be silent on the matter. If they’re a workmate, depending on your job, it could be career-limiting to tell them you’re

The other day I was remembering how I played WoW with my baby son asleep in my arms. I think he was no older than a year. My wife would feed him, then go to sleep exhausted early in the evening, and I’d stay up with him. Sometimes in my arms, or once he was truly asleep I’d move him into the cot. Generally the little fella would wake two or three hours later, and I’d stop gaming, wake

In my guild forums, I just read this reply. It struck me. We’d been talking about how the official forums are a fairly pointless place to post, or to try resolving anything, or to complain even.
I wrote this:
You can’t win fights on the internet when its a forum full of people who want to bully others.
A guildmate Rotnronnie replied:
Why is it that we have to go to external forums to interface with the intelligent yet

I was thinking today about which class, or classes, I totally avoid playing. I have interest in my DK (obviously) and my Druid alt (resto). I have loved and raided with a Hunter, Warlock, Paladin and Mage. Only the Mage is on my new realm, the others are inactive now on my former EU realm, but I’d play those classes if I didn’t have to level new ones. I’ve played a Rogue to L33 or so, pretty fun really

I didn’t know they are instant cast (were is more precise; Blizzard removed them for the moment) and are used in a normal high-end rogue rotation. That’s a pretty cool way to get more dps. I wonder if they generate personal threat and could be used by tanks.
MMO Champion’s commentary is particularly good, showing that the grenades truly are a normal part of how their rogue did his job.
The question is whether it was obvious to Ensidia that something

The armour versus stamina epic thread on maintankadin is an entertaining read. Other than being a good analysis of Total Effective Health, and its applicability to decisions between armour and stamina trinkets, it has a fascinating set of exchanges with a few belligerent posters who pretend to be honest debaters but are actually manipulative.
After a dummy-spit from Eminai (who had some good ideas but was unable to control his vitriol), here’s Theck’s rebuttal, below from p11. It outlines why Theck’s a theorycrafter to respect, beyond just his maths, but for his humility and level-headedness. I’ve said before, one thing I respect in him is the ability to admit he’s wrong and change his mind, which is a crucial quality of intelligence that I didn’t see in Eminai.
I put Theck in blue.
Eminai wrote:If you can’t see how adding healing done into a formula that assumes you receive invalidates everything about that formula, I shudder to think of what kind of aneurysm inducing “math” I would find in your actual theorycrafting.
I haven’t done this, which is abundantly clear from the examples I’ve given. It is you whom is misunderstanding things. Nobody is trying to redefine Effective Health.

A few moments yesterday made me smile at Blizzard’s cleverness, and one wtf moment you might help me puzzle out.
This quest text is brilliant. I laughed out loud.
quest: adding injury to insult
This quest was on my druid alt (resto/boom), now L68 and enjoying Northrend. I just started him up since I’m happy with where I’ve got Gravity up to.
I only need a new cloak and trinket now for Gravity, other upgrades I’ll get from

The other day I did a random and ended up in Halls of Reflection. In my frost tank spec, I’m comfortable with the waves and the gauntlet. Does take fiddly management of all my abilities, and isn’t easy, but normally I get through it without any deaths.
This time, however, we kept dying and I could not work out why. I still don’t, really, but the team pulled through eventually and I really enjoyed the run. Gave me positive

I read a number of blogs. You can download a file containing them all from my sidebar, which can import to Google Reader. I sometimes read on the train, or like today, when I’m back at work for the first day of the new year and cannot be stuffed to do anything much. So, I did some catching-up with blogs.
Here are some of the best posts selected from all the writers I follow, with a bias to content

I’m a very goal-oriented person. I like to have a plan of some kind, in my head, of the kinds of things I should do when I’m next in the game. Some people write up gear lists, with a pick order, or (before Randoms) so they’d know which 5-mans heroics to farm, or which bosses drop the loot they want.
I’ve never really organised gear lists for myself beyond scanning the total environment and knowing what’s available. I don’t
