Mumble and murmur: voice comms

Blood Legion, on their Lich King kill announcement, said:

We’d like to mention that this kill wouldn’t have been possible without the near-zero latency voice chat of a newly-discovered Ventrillo alternative that we just started using, called Mumble.  We encourage players to try out this new software!

That’s a very high accolade. It’s not an off-hand comment.

I hadn’t even heard of Mumble.  It’s an open source, very low latency voice comms system. Here’s their home page. It’s been

Mimiron 10

Note: I’ve updated my 10 and 25-man guide post too, nearly finished now.

Last night I got to see, and kill on the 12th attempt, Mimiron 10-man. It gave me some thoughts on performance improvement.

The guild has had him down before but I missed those nights. Notably our win, the final attempt before we’d have called it a night anyhow, included a change to using a shadow priest rather than warlock on the Aerial ranged-tank phase, suggested by

OODA, military theory applied to WoW

For some time, I have used Boyd’s OODA concept as my model for how decision-making works during a fight. It’s observe, orient, decide, act. Boyd was a superb US airforce pilot, one of the best dogfighters of his era and became a leading military theorist.

“… the key to victory is to be able to create situations wherein one can make appropriate decisions more quickly than one’s opponent.”

His work is worth reading more. Wikipedia’s article is a good

KT in a pug: testing leader addons

I just did a pug of last 3 Naxx-10 bosses on my alt hunter. Took the opportunity to test Debuff Enough, Ensidia Fails, Loggerhead, RaidBuffStatus, Skada and World of Logs.  I can now say confidently, they are all top-notch addons, recommended.

I’ve been using Deadly Boss Mods for a while now (having retired Big Wigs because its GUI annoyed me and it took a lot of CPU even when idle). I continue to be happy with it, and it

Raid debuff tracking: addon reviews

Having a raid leader or officer watch the debuffs on a boss can be a good idea. Back in the old days of 40-man raiding, debuff management was even more important that now. I haven’t used a debuff monitoring addon for a while. Now, to move into hard modes, I’d like to improve and monitor our dps so will start using one.

The point is to have an at-a-glance review of which debuffs are missing, more so than what

Raid buff checking addon, with taunt failure warnings: RaidBuffStatus

This morning I came across RaidBuffStatus. Update: I’ve since raid tested it and highly recommend this addon for raid leaders.

It provides intelligent raid buff checking prior to the pull, is talent-spec aware, has a real-time visual window of tank health/healer mana/dead healers/ missing buffs and (icing on the cake) has tank taunt warnings.

RaidBuffStatus also has an information video here, developed by a Finnish player (cool accent).

I like how seriously the author

Awareness and control for raid leaders

This is a topic I’ll come back to a number of times. Below I outline a few tools which give the raid leader crucial information in real-time and post-mortem.

Real-time raid DPS (not personal dps)

  • Recount has a graphic raid dps feature, plus its FuBar plugin can be configured to display it; that’s a lot simpler on the eye
  • Skada also has raid dps. I noticed Skada has much lower CPU hit when I profiled it, so I’m
