Shield-tanks vs DKs in heroics

Jan 6th: ha ! I knew I was right. See this Blue post.

Original post follows.

I’d like to do some analysis on how a shield-tank feels less squishy in heriocs, because shield block reduces the average incoming hit by such a high proportion. Against a raid boss, the shield block diminishes in value (well argued and established on tankspot).

But in a Heroic, I know shield-tanks can feel less squishy than DKs; I believe it’s shield block. I’d like to work out exactly how much it helps though.

The problem was, looking at the data didn’t really support my hypothesis… details on that at the end.

How much is blocked?

  • An epic, well-geared paladin or warrior is blocking 1500 to 2000.
  • Comments to this post have further data points (thanks guys and gals)
  • A friend of mine (i213 warrior) is blocking for about 1200.

Some WWS data points below. Note I did not check to see if any priest or shaman damage-reduction buffs were up because what I was looking for really was some ranges of trash and boss damage, and some confirmations on block values. Those buffs could influence data.

Just for simplicity, I didn’t pull out data on druid tanks, even though they have a bear block.

Here’s a WWS of a Utgarde Keep speed run with a maintankadin, with a geared team. Here’s a screenshot of that for the WWS expires.

  • On trash, the maximum physical hit taken was 5771.
  • Average hit 1252 (that includes those he partially blocked)
  • His average block was for 1923.
  • 49.8% avoidance + mitigation, 6.4% of that was block
  • On bosses, maximum hit was 10797.
  • Average hit 2122, max 10797
  • Average block 1902 (about the same as trash, as it should be: it’s a linear stat).

Here’s WWS of UK again with an ordinary DK tank. Screenshot.

Another WWS of UK with DK tank. Screenshot.

  • Trash: average 1829
  • max 5236, avoidance 55.2%
  • Bosses: max 9213, average 2259

Warrior tank WWS screenshot.

  • Trash: average 1702, maximum 4414, block value 1985
  • 59.9% avoidance and mitigation, 9.1% of that is block
  • Boss: average 1806, max 6027, block value 2857 (must have used talents/trinkets)
  • 54.8% avoidance and mitigation, 6.8% of that as block

Blood tank in heroics, tested

Hi all,

I had a few readers tell me they had no troubles as Blood tank heroics, so I went and tested it more thoroughly.

Result is I’ve changed my view, and now think it’s quite viable. I’ve updated this post and include a screenshot with the corpse explosion damage, which is one of the two key things you need for it to work.

Frost or Unholy still beat it hands-down, but Blood doesn’t suck. I even succeeded in

3.2 woohoo fun

I bet we all had a great day today. I got on for just a few hours.

Respec’d into Unholy tank, not sure how to do my PvP spec yet. Mailed off gems for transmuting, prospected some titanium, got one epic gem, ran HoS heroic daily. Bought several tanking epic recipes. Wrote guild post so no-one else doubles-up on them.

conquest in heroics

Used those emblems to get new i226 belt, fixed a buckle, will put epic gem in it tomorrow when transmutes come back. Put Deadly Ametrine on the AH, see if it sells.

New 'heroic' items

I like how the new heroic raids will drop upgraded items of those that drop in normal.

Faction Champions, for example, has the Justicebringer two-handed sword on 25-man (ilevel 245) and it also drops on heroic (ie. ‘hard mode’) but has ilevel 258.

They have different colours too, but the same model.

MMO-champion has the heroic item with a ‘heroic’ label in its tooltip, too. Not sure what happens in-game.

The heroic version is a notable upgrade to the

Violet Hold heroic: ugly bosses

You’ll be doing VH heroic a lot in 3.2. There are two bosses people have trouble with:

  • Ethereal boss Xevozz
  • Void elemental boss Zuramat

Xevozz requires continual kiting. Here’s the path you should take. You go back and forth all the way from one side to the other. With 2.5K+ dpsers, you should only need 1 to 1.5 rounds.

Violet Hold kiting path for Xevozz

Zurmat, void boss, requires you know about two things:

Lots of 5-mans to tank

Improved LFG interface

I like 5-man heroics.

I like trying to do them as quick as possible and enjoy a bit of good old fashioned AOE tanking. With 3.2, everyone will be doing heroics, intensely. Once their main is all badged up (one or two months), then their alts will do the same. We tanks will have lots of opportunity to give some smackdown. Personally, I’ll be tanking anything I can for badges, even Heroic Oculus (the mounts get

Emblem changes: explained

Currently in 3.1

  • Ulduar 25 gives Conquest Emblem
  • Naxx 25 and Ulduar 10 gives Valor Emblem
  • Naxx 10 and 5-man heroics give Heroism Emblem

Change in 3.2

  • Naxx 25 & 10, and Heroic 5-mans will give Conquest Emblem

Significance:  (1) by doing 5-mans and low-tier raids, in 3.2 you will be able to buy badge-gear that previously only Ulduar-25 man raiders could access, (2) and get them very fast by
