Cataclysm DK Tank Gear List

About gearing, reforging, justice points, upgrade decisions, BiS, gemming and enchants for DK tanks.

Postby Kuren » 02 Dec 2010, 10:37

Contents
What this list provides:
  • A compilation of tank gear relevant to end game tanking based on the level of the gear.
  • Some lower items may be omitted as the purpose of this is current raid gear.
What this list is not:
  • A gear ranking system that attempts to provide best in slot. Best in Slot is subjective to each individual based on one's own stat deficiencies. That said, we will probably have a BiS list soon.
Notes:
  • Some of the headings are links to filtered Wowhead searches that can help identify other possible items of interest in recent patches. The lists includes items 272+ that are from patch 4.1 and on. You can change it at Wowhead if you want to look at other items.
  • Please send any corrections or missing items as a private message since it will help keep this thread cleaner.
  • This list will focus on current gear applicable to a newer tank through to progressions tanks.

Change Log:
  • 02 Dec 2011 - Updates for patch 4.3.
  • 05 Jul 2011 - Updates for patch 4.2.
  • 30 Apr 2011 - Updates for patch 4.1.
  • 29 Oct 2010 - Initial List.

I have 2 questions.
Is this list ordered simply according to iLVL? or were there stat weighting involved rather than just a simple filter?
How does something like [Bedrock Talisman] compare to [Petrified Twilight Scale] and [Unidentifiable Organ]? I can imagine that the heroic versions will be even closer or that those trinkets from ICC and RS need a serious nerf to make them balanced to iLVL.

edit: Oh right! was stuff like [Soul Casket] added intentionally or was it simply something that got by?

Re-read the notes at the top of the first post.

Soul Casket was a mistake. I'm currently working on this list and it was easiest to just post it. The formatting depends on the phpbb code here.

Kuren's list continues a tradition started on dkinfo, which is an iLevel list. The decision on 'best' or most appropriate is up to the tank.

What this list is not:
A gear ranking system that attempts to provide best in slot. Best in Slot is subjective to each individual based on one's own stat deficiencies. That said, we will probably have a BiS gear list soon.

I find this bit a little confusing. As I understand it, BiS for each slot normally means the item you would have in that slot in the ideal set of gear. So basically it's the gear to aim for in the long term. However, having a BiS list isn't sufficient for making good gear decisions in the short term, which is why a list like this is very helpful. But, it's not quite right to say that BiS is subjective based on current gear, when the BiS concept is about an ideal set of gear. At least, that's my understanding of how BiS is normally used, and I could be off on that. So, you could say something like:

What this list is not

A list of "Best in Slot" gear - which means which item you would have in which slot in an ideal set of gear. BiS provides a set of gear to aim for in the long term, but in the short term when you don't have access to all the BiS pieces, your individual stat deficiencies might make an item other than the BiS one a better choice. That said, we will probably have a BiS gear list soon.

Personally, I'm ok with removing quite a bit of it to shrink down the disclaimers and notes at the top.

I think there is confusion on these terms. "Best in Slot" could indicate that the item is the best possible item for that slot without considering any other slots. The criteria for choosing these items needs to be established though. It's also been used to represent an ideal armor set, although I think the term doesn't really apply as well.

The best answer is that there isn't any "best in slot" gear. Gear is useful based on what you have, the encounter, your raid composition, etc. You can tweak just about anything and the best option can change based on several things. This gear list is meant to be the answer because you can scan it and find all relevant tank gear.

We're probably diving into these details more than intended for this thread though.

Although if we're going to hash all of it out, I think the other issue is reforging. I'm ignoring it to a degree and going to items with at least one stat that we'd want. While you can reforge a crit/haste item to get tanking stats, you would really want to start with something that has at least one of our most desirable stats. For now, I think a piece of gear needs at least dodge, parry, or mastery to be interesting.

BiS - I think it would be better to avoid using the phrase "best in slot" entirely. As you say, it's ambiguous by itself, and it's also confusing if you use it in a different sense than how it's being used elsewhere. BiS in the sense of coming up with an ideal gear set is a more useful concept for dps.

Reforging - I'd add expertise and hit to the list of interesting stats for tanks. The extra stamina on a higher iLvL item with (for example) hit/haste might make it an upgrade over a lower iLvL item with two tanking stats.

I dont like BiS lists either, there is no "The 1 item", it all depends on what else you're wearing.

Anyways, about the aquisition of the Magma Plated Battlearmor.
From what I understand, you can buy the ilvl 359 chestpiece, gloves and leggings with VP only. The ilvl 359 Helm and shoulders can be bought with, respectivly, [Helm of the Forlorn Vanquisher] and [Mantle of the Forlorn Vanquisher]. These tokens are bought with an item called [Essence of the Forlorn], that is assumed to drop from raidbosses.

Upgrading the item to the heroic version -ilvl 372- requires an additional [Essence of the Forlorn], for a HC token, and the item you are upgrading.
Note that the tokens for the Helm and Shoulders and now called [Crown of the Forlorn Vanquisher] and [Shoulders of the Forlorn Vanquisher].

So
ilvl 359;
Chest, Hands, Legs ; VP
Helm, Shoulders ; [Essence of the Forlorn] for Token

ilvl 372;
Chest, Hands, Legs; 359 armor piece + [Essence of the Forlorn] for HC Token
Helm, Shoulders; 359 armor piece + [Essence of the Forlorn] for HC Token

Mind you, I'm not 100% sure about this. At least this system would stop everyone from getting a full raiding tier set without doing much raiding.

Just for clarification, I need to do the BiS List for Cata, so: Are you leaving anything out of this list? Gear, Gems, Enchants, anything? I'd very much rather go by this than have to filter out search results on Wowhead once again >.< Only doing BiS for Heroic Dungeon and Heroic Raid, no Normal Mode versions.

Also: For stuff like [Crown of Wings] and [Grinning Fang Helm] which is basically the same item but Faction-Specific I'd put it next to each other with (Ally) or (Horde) next to it in parentheses or something like that. Wildhammer and Dragonmaw are the Twilight Highlands Faction, they're Alliance and Horde Specific so they have different Quartermasters with different items too. Same stats, just different names. Think kinda like how all the T9 Gear in ToTC/ToGC had Faction-Specific versions, same thing here.

Heroic Dungeons having the same gear as their normal versions just higher stats like Raids helps out a lot :D

Wowhead isn't complete yet. The cata.wowhead.com is gone. Wowhead should get all the data again but it might take some time. I plan on having everything here though.

I realize those two items are the same. I have this partially automated and at the moment it doesn't work for me to combine those but I can look into a way to group items that are just Alliance/Horde-specific versions.

According to the latest post on MMO-champion, the cost of normal Tier 11 chestpiece, gloves and leggings are 2200 VP for each. Helm and Shoulders are bought with [Helm of the Forlorn Vanquisher] and [Mantle of the Forlorn Vanquisher].

I took the VP costs straight from the vendor in Orgrimmar. It shows the gauntlets as 1650 VP. I have to recheck the helm and shoulders. I'm not sure on that as I don't see helm or shoulders for VP so I may have written it down incorrectly. This stuff is bought at vendors currently in the game so let's talk about what we see there though, and not what MMO-Champion has since they could be wrong.
