We’re chatting in my guild forums about killing the Lich King last night, and the question was asked how tough that fight is relative to others in WoW history. I haven’t killed every boss (didn’t do much Black Temple, for example, and no Sunwell at all, since my casual guild at the time was behind on progression).
I answered the reason it’s a hard fight is because it’s a Type C in Tobold’s classification. To recap, saving you to

My guild, Axis of Dath’remar, a 10-man raiding guild of one night a week, tonight, finally killed the Lich King. I was so very happy about it.
Axis is made up of a former hardcore guys who’ve now got the balance right, like four-day a week raiders in previous expansions. I must say our raid leader Dakas is superb, and this makes a big difference. He’s constantly calling ‘defile coming, away from middle’, or the reverse, making the decision

Vox Immortalis have released some new video guides to compliment their already-extensive stable.
Video guide to heroic Putricide is on youtube:
They also recently added Heroic Putricide as well as the Dances with Oozes, Flu Shot Shortage, and Full House achievements. Visit their channel for a full list. Registered users can also download high-res versions.
To recap: the Lich King fight has three phases where you are in the centre, and between each of them are transition phases when you move to the edge.
Moving between the phases also requires a strategy
Each time you are in the center he gains a new ability or two like Spell “Soul Reaper” not found. whilst other abilities remain, like Infest. On the second edge-phase he spawns more raging spirits than the first time.
The clever design feature here

One of my favourite strategy bloggers, NER, has now done her Lich King strat. As usual, it’s written with the attention to detail that a raid leader needs.
For example, on Defile and how to learn it. NER says everyone needs to have the Lich King as their focus, and must have the focus’ target shown in their UI. Here’s an extract from the strat guide.
Defile has a 1.5s cast time (this is important) and when cast will drop

ICC is now at 10%.
A few topics related to this: 1. Eventually you can change gem strategy from stamina to avoidance, because you will simply have enough stamina. Wrathy has been talking about this for a little while. 2. Do you feel like its ‘easy mode’ at 10%? Will you feel ripped-off if you can’t kill a boss until 15%? Is the buff coming too fast?
At 5%, Everblue calculated the buff was worth about 4 seconds more on Putricide, which gave

The guild I’m in, Axis, killed Blood Princes 10 last night. Last week, we got Putricide (I missed that one, had real-life stuff intercept me). We only raid once a week from 8pm til midnight. There’s a second raid night for alts.
We don’t have a competitive stance in progression, which would be pretty silly for a raid guild of one night, yet are the most progressed in Icecrown amongst 10-man only Horde guilds on our little server. We’re

When you are briefing a raid team on a fight they have not seen before, or one which they’re not very familiar, you shouldn’t be too wordy.
Before the first pull
I like everyone to have watched a fight video, which you’d linked in guild forums some days before. Ideally you’ve agreed on a strategy framework, if there are alternative methods.
On the night, I think you should give a brief description of the fight, then go in a

I have mentioned this great addon once before, Boss Notes (back in Sept 09). Those guilds going up against Putricide you might find it helpful. Saves alt-tabbing to whichever website you use.
It can learn boss’ abilities (make sure you turn this on; it’s off by default). This gives you their spells (with tooltips), in a handy notebook, into which you can also write your own tips and reminders. Includes simple written strategies for all the older bosses, too,

I really paused for thought after reading Tobold’s classification of raid encounters.
Looking at the title of his post, ‘raid encounter classification’, you might well think his answers would describe the mechanics of a fight like this:
- tank/spank (Patchwerk)
- coordinated movement (Thaddius)
- keep yourself alive (Heigan)
- save your friends (Maexxna)
I used Naxx examples so everyone can relate to it.
But in fact, what’s so clever, is he looks instead at where the pressure is placed, and who needs

I like this addon, Boss Notes. Gives you an in-game notebook for each boss.
Comes with dot-point reminders of the key things for Ulduar bosses, for example, and you can enter your own. These can be broadcast to a channel you choose.
Another example of what a warlock might put in a personal note for a boss:
It also knows and learns the abilities that boss’ cast, so you build up a reference

Not quite the place I’d expect to find well-written boss strategy guides: wowhead.
The’ve got Jaraxxus, Northrend Beasts and Twin Val’kyrs written so far, plus Ulduar bosses. I’ve updated my Coliseum guide to include these condensed, to-the-point and well-written strategy guides from wowhead. Worth a look.
I have compiled the best boss strategies into a handy page here. It includes videos from Tankspot and written guides.
You’ll be doing VH heroic a lot in 3.2. There are two bosses people have trouble with:
- Ethereal boss Xevozz
- Void elemental boss Zuramat
Xevozz requires continual kiting. Here’s the path you should take. You go back and forth all the way from one side to the other. With 2.5K+ dpsers, you should only need 1 to 1.5 rounds.
Violet Hold kiting path for Xevozz
Zurmat, void boss, requires you know about two things:
What are the essential differences you need to know about when going from 10 to 25 man Ulduar? Here are the changes. This does not explain hard modes, except on a few.

I assume you have watched TankSpot videos and read strategy guides, so this does not cover those basics.
In the 25-man column I’ll describe if the ability or your strategy needs to change. If something simply hits harder, I’ll still say

I just told Teza he needs to profile these guides more.
wowraid has really good strat guides for Naxx. Sure, it might be old-hat for some people but if you need them, instead of wowwiki or stratfu guides, you should check these out.
This is hidden gem, the content is excellent. It’s quality is assisted by a little community of hardcore raiders who like helping out and hang out in #wowraid, plus who edit guides like this. (Example, I was
